Boosting climate-friendly Technology

From 2010 to December 2019 DEG managed the “Climate partnerships with the private sector” programme. It focused on promoting technology and knowledge transfer between European companies and developing and emerging-market countries in order to help them build up a green economy.

The programme financed private-sector projects that supported the introduction of climate-friendly technologies, adapted proven technologies for reducing greenhouse gas emissions to the specific conditions in the target countries, demonstrated the application of innovative technologies and engineered structural improvements in the use of green energy.

The initiative thus succeeded in enlisting the private sector as an additional actor in the fight against climate change in developing and emerging-market countries. It was open to German and European companies, including in partnership with local businesses.

The projects implemented came from different areas and varied in scope: they ranged from demonstration projects for innovative technologies, such as decentralised water desalination based on renewable energies, to the demonstration of irrigation pumps powered by hydropower and projects for rural electrification in off-grid regions or the development of an online tool for an energy-efficient production method.

The funding for the “Climate partnerships with the private sector” programme was provided under the “International Climate Initiative” (IKI) run by the German Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation and Nuclear Safety.
