The City of Cologne has presented DEG with the "KölnEngagiert 2016" volunteer award for its work as part of local volunteer event "Kölner Freiwilligentage".

The awards, which acknowledge exceptional commitment to volunteer work, were presented at the city’s historic town hall on 4 September 2016. The prizewinners were selected from a total of 148 submissions by an independent panel of judges. As well as four individuals, these included two schools and three groups, including the voluntary team behind the Oxfam Shop in the south of the city. DEG was the only company to be singled out for the award.

Following the award ceremony, the central Heumarkt area of the city was devoted to the 17th Cologne Volunteer Day, where all prizewinners were once again acknowledged in public for their efforts.

Since 2012, DEG has made it possible for its employees to volunteer for various projects in Cologne twice a year with the assistance of the local volunteer agency ("Kölner Freiwilligen Agentur"). This year, DEG is focusing its efforts on helping refugees living in Cologne: in the spring, refugee families were invited to go on a communal outing. At the next volunteer day at the end of September, DEG employees will set up a small woodworking shop in a refugee centre in Cologne-Dellbrück.
